Q. How do I know if I need therapy or counseling?
A: People seek individual treatment for a wide variety of reasons, from coping with major life challenges or childhood trauma, to dealing with depression or anxiety, to simply desiring personal growth and greater self-knowledge. If you are considering any of these please contact me for a consultation.
Q: What is a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)?
Marriage and Family Therapists are mental health professionals trained in psychotherapy and family systems and licensed to independently diagnose and treat mental health and substance abuse problems. MFTs focus on understanding their client’s symptoms and interactional patterns within their existing environment and treat their clients from a relationship perspective. MFTs have a minimum of a Master’s Degree plus two years of post-graduate supervised clinical experience. Visit www.aamft.org for more information.
Q: Who should I bring to therapy?
Clients seeking individual therapy will be seen one-on-one with the Therapist. For Couples Counseling, it is recommended that all partners attend their sessions together. Clients seeking Family Therapy are asked to bring all members of the family unit residing in their household and/or with whom they are experiencing relational conflict.
Q: How often should I (we) attend therapy?
Therapy sessions are 50 minutes each and occur on a weekly basis. Additional or fewer sessions are determined based on client needs and in consultation with your therapist. A client(s) and therapist may work together for as few as five (5) sessions or as long as several years, depending on the client’s unique needs and personal goals for therapy.
